Inspired by this week’s episode of The Great British Sewing Bee (Series 8 Episode 9) and listening to episode 43 of the podcast From What If to What Next I’ve been attempting to darn a hole in a sock. Yes, my attempt so far isn’t ‘visible mending’, it’s definitely not sashiko (a Japanese form of repair) and it isn’t all that good as an example of darning but we all have to start somewhere and it turns out it was much quicker to fix the sock than knit a whole new one.
The From What If to What Next podcast features to Flora Collingwood-Norris whose work I have been admiring on Twitter for a while. I dream of one day being able to take those worn out clothes I’ve saved just in case and turn them into something more beautiful as well as rescuing the children’s favourite stained and holey garments.
I’ve yet to notice any visible mending out in real life but I’ve seen it mentioned quite a bit around the internet recently and now TGBSB have had a go I’m sure it’s something we’ll be seeing more of.
